Are we really in control of our lives or is there a higher power, fate or destiny that pulls the strings? In the recent past an acquaintance posed a question that caused me to deep-think the subject.
On one side of the story destiny implies that everything is already planned to create a final outcome and will play out according to that plan.
Freewill suggests that we have multiple choices to make moment by moment.
It seems like a contradiction but in reality, it may be that destiny and freewill complement each other. They work harmoniously as a team and enhance each other to reach a common goal.
Think of it in this way, before we incarnate, we form an agreement or contract with ourself and with others. We plan who we want to connect with in this lifetime, what experiences we would like and of course any lessons that would contribute to our forward movement in evolution. This can be thought of as the overall destination – or our destiny.
The freewill we are gifted with is about our choices, it is about how we navigate the path through life. There are numerous decisions and actions that we make throughout our daily lives in order to reach our final destination and that is the freewill part.
Consider a road between two points. The Road of Life. The road is fixed, it is the connection between the two points. That is the destiny.
How we travel the road is flexible, we have the choice to walk, run, ride, bicycle or any other mode of transportation. Along the way we encounter various situations, there may be side roads we wish to explore that offer exciting adventures, it all contributes to the richness of the experiences. That is the Freewill.
Another way to think of it is: Destiny is the river, it flows towards a particular end. Freewill is how you navigate within the current, how you swim, canoe, or use another mode of transportation, it’s how you ride the waves, how you experience each part of the diverse journey.
Our existence as an incarnated soul is under the direction of our Higher Self. That great power is our guiding Light. The High Self knows every detail of our life plan and allows us the freedom to explore life as he/she sees fit while still keeping us pointed in the right direction to attain our goal.
To sum it all up: Both Freewill and Destiny can coexist within a broader spiritual framework where the soul has the freedom to make choices and still stay within the bounds of a higher purpose that is part of a Divine plan.
